"Not For Commercial Use"

Other Illustrator's Work that I like..

Erin Petson...

What i have noticed with most illustrators is that they don't just draw what they see in front of them, they illustrate their interpretation. To do a good illustration does not mean that you have to make it look exactly like what you see in front of you.

Finding my style..

After our visual language lessons, i really need to start to find my drawing style. I have always loved the style of Stina Persson. So i think i should start doing some transcriptions of her work, i have already done some..but i need to start doing it in my own style.
See links for reference to her work!

Drunk Driving Stickers

http://www.cherryflava.com/cherryflava/2007/12/arrive-alive-re.html

I really like this idea. The design industry is continually having to think up inventive ideas to get the message across. People don't listen to posters anymore, it needs to be something that will stop them in their stride and think about what it is saying. Their are posters and Billboards everywhere. You need something far more inventive now to make an event on someone.
The messages on the T-shirts sum up what the stickers are trying to say.

Christmas Holidays!

Have been given a new brief (of course) over the christmas Holidays..i have to research food! I will have to try my best to make it exciting! Although have not really done that much on it yet, and have been home almost a week now. hmm.

Billboard

I think this advertisement is so clever,
"The Billboard was done by a South African Paul Sanders, he works for Ogilvy Cape Town as a creative head. The billboard has won top awards for its creative genius. For more great advertising go to Ogilvy Cape Town!"

But i can't help but think the light above that advertisement is wasting electricity - a bit of a contradiction!

Advertising..human interaction.

Severed Arm Promotes Tarantino Movie

In Amsterdam, a strategically placed severed arm holds a Death Proof DVD promoting the movie and the theater playing it. These zombie hands weren't bad either.

Evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I have developed idea generation skills, working mainly with imagery. I tend to do mind-maps of words before moving onto imagery, which I think works well for me. It allows me to clarify the meaning of the word and when doing the mind map it triggers imagery in my mind which I then go on to look at it greater depth.
I think I have also learnt to look at ideas of a more objective view, when doing work I used to get so involved with the idea that I forgot what I was doing. I have learnt to step back from it every now and then and go back to what the original brief was.
Crits have helped me to try and look at my designs from other points of view, to see if the audience would take away what I wanted them to take away from the design.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
When generating work I have learnt to become an expert of the brief, to fully understand the meaning of any given words, and then explore this word using as much imagery as possible. If I struggle to come up with a solution, I now try and break the brief down to just one word. This approach has been a great help, as It gives me a greater understanding of what I am doing.
I have learnt that sitting on your on is not going to help you come with a good design, you need other creative people around you in order to inspire ideas. Sharing a studio that we do now helps massively in idea generation, being able to share thoughts and ideas. I like that this course allows for everyone’s own way of working, it does not encourage everyone to work in the same way. So this enables for a greater variety of ideas to be put to the table.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
My strength I think is in idea generation. I really enjoy this, becoming an expert of a word, discovering more about it and coming up with ideas. I like the development of ideas, exploring all the possibilities.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
The weaknesses in my work I think are mainly in my packaging project, if I am not enjoying a project I find it a lot harder to commit to it. It took me so long to come up with an idea of what I was going to do, the final pieces were rushed and therefore I am not completely happy with the outcome.
In other projects I feel that they lack developmental work. I have mainly worked in sketch books, and maybe this is restricting the size at which I can work at so I could look at working on larger work spaces when developing my ideas.
I found it harder to work in a group, because everyone had different ideas, and it was hard to communicate your own ideas, especially as this was the first brief that we had. It was an ice breaker however between members of our class.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
Next time, I would simply put more time aside to work on my projects. There are many areas that I did not feel happy with in this module, particularly the packaging that I would have liked longer to work on it.
I should also ask for more opinions on my work from other members of the class, I am still not fully comfortable with talking about my own work. This should help to clarify any problems with the message I am trying to put across. Having lots of different points of view and ideas is what creates a good design.
I should use the studio more, during this module I found it easier to work from home, because I need to have all my stuff around me, I feel I should learn to work more in the studio as I think it will benefit the outcome of my work being able to discuss it with others.
I was not very organized with work; this affected what I was able to hand in. I May have done more work than I handed it but I was not very organized with storing it all, and so I felt like I was selling myself short. Next time I am going to keep it all filed in my folder, so that all my work is all together all the time, or make more use of my plan chest.
Next time, I want to be more committed to my work, now that I know how everything within the college and our course work I will be more determined to work hard. With everything being new I felt unsure of how much work we were being asked to do, and I think I was stuck in my routine of college last year, waiting to be asked to do work. But In my next module I will just get on with It on my own accord, which is what I would rather do anyway.

Sunday.. (forgot to actually post until today)

Deadline!
Tomorrow is module deadline day! Pretty relaxed about it all really..i have pretty much done all the work already, just need to do a bit more on the packaging brief..but have all day tomorrow to sort it. It does worry me a bit that i don't actually feel like i have much work to do..everytime i do a piece of work he never takes as long as i think it will. Is this a good thing?

Monday 12 November 2007

Monday.

Have got a week until module deadline now. Just been doing illustrator work. Still need to do the final five of my own fonts.
Packaging brief, i am really not enjoying this one. Just want to get it out of the way. But i have the net made, well took it from that book so it should not be too difficult to do.

Packaging Brief...

Really am not enjoying this project so far. Have changed my word to prejudice instead of racism as i found prejudice was still relevant to racism but allowed for a broader range of ideas. My idea now is based on the idea of judgement and assumption based on first opinions. This relates into packaging, for example you might have a box shaped like a cigarette box, you assume it is this but you open it up to find and this it isnt! You are assuming something, making a judgement.

Wednesday 7 November 2007

Packaging Brief..

Should have started looking at this sooner, but have been doing my elective sketchbook!
How can i package racism? I have started to look at the two phrases that relate to my project...dont judge a book by its cover, or the phrase i used on my poster. Don't let skin colour mask identity. So far i have got the idea of packaging a gun, but on the outside of the cover there is really floral and happy designs, not relating to what you would expect to be on the package of a gun. I think this idea could work, but what colours and designs should i put on the package? I could always use the floral type design from my posters..design relating to masks..does this work?? Its hitting on the idea of prejudice..what you assume for something to be like..so the package will be in the shape of a gun..but the design should not relate to the idea of a gun at all..i think that is my idea sorted. But lets wait and see what happens in the crit!

Poster Project Update

Deadline is monday. Unfortunetly i did not make it to college on Friday, so missed the all important crit. I think there is something wrong wth me!! I am always tired and drowsy. I intended to go to college, got up and everything. Felt a bit dodgy so lay on my bed and fell alseep..next thing i know it was gone 12 o'clock.
But anyway, feel this project is never going to end! Its going ok i guess, i guess i am unsure, and having not had the crit doesnt really help. I will have to show it to someone off my course tomorrow and see what they say. But anyway, it is taking shape...stupidly though as i have been experimenting i have been doing it A4 scale. So its going to end up being really pixelated. So will have to try sort that!

Thursday 1 November 2007

Poster Project.

Think i have finally got my idea sorted, going to use the idea of masks. I got to this idea by looking at the idea of racial prejudice. The idea that racists don't look past the colour of the skin, and so their view of these people is distored or masked. And then the text i am going to have is, "Don't let colour of skin mask Identity"
I hope this works! I have a crit on it tomorrow so if i do work on it tonight and discover that it does not work, then im in a bit of a muddle. But, i think i am going to be happy with this piece, the best work i have done since being here anyway.
Last night was so fun, suffering a bit today, thankfully had quite a painless day at college, but am looking forward to a nap when i get back :)
I just read back on my blog and i know im dyslexic, but my grammar is terrible! I know the correct grammar but i just type as if i am talking and dont really think too much about spelling and punctutation and what not.
Back to illustrator Induction!

Visual thinking

First visual thinking lesson today, basically had to draw lines! And to think i was worried about if my drawing skills were going to be good enough for this class..but with have to do alot of drawing as support material for this module..not to sure what we need to do drawings off. Shall have to check this with Fred..if its just doodles or if it is to be of relevance to our projects.
Just been doing some work on my Racism and Steretype project tonight, its related to the newspaper brief we go over reading week. We have to do three posters relating to a message within the newspapers..and mine was to do with police having the right to stop more black teenagers in order to prevent gun and knife crime. So i broke this message down to "dont judge a book by its cover..." I have not really got very far tonight, i have ideas but i just dont know if they are going to work so end up going in circle. But my mind feels a bit boggled, so going to leave it until tomorrow now when a little more refreshed! Have the day of so have plently of time to go over some ideas and take photos if i need to.
Its also haloween tomorrow! Shall have to sory my fancy dress outfit out too. Excited! I dont think i have ever been excited about haloween, but it seems to be an exuse for a big night out agmonst students, so im not complaining. If everyone gets this excited about haloween god knows what christmas time is going to be like.

Home!

Just trying to do my Critical Studies Brief, looking at adverts and came across this one...

Its from 1990 - i like it because its eye catching. If you just glance at it you want to look at it again to understand the full meaning of it. The use of humour makes it stick in your mind which is really the whole point of advertising.

My Favourite Adverts!

Printmaking!

Last day of the elective tomorrow, have really enjoyed it. Its such a long day though and i am so tired. I ache all over from standing up all day! I am obviously not hardcore enough - so have been having little naps when ever possible. Just starting to do some work now - have to do a sketch book and write about each process and what not.
Am going home tomorrow, really looking forward to it. Mainly because im anxious as to how it we feel to be back home.

Elective

My printmaking elective starts tomorrow, it says that we need to take imagery. It can be photographic or hand drawn..so just trying to decide what to take now. It all has to be the same theme too, will have to look into my A-Level stuff..i think its times like this when having done foundation would help, just because i would have more material.

Book Binding!

Today we made a book! I didnt expect it to be such a professional looking hardback book. It was quite a tedious day though, our tutor made it look so easy but it was just so fiddly - i was not very good at it - managed to make quite a mess. The end product however is pretty good, a few glue spillages here and there, but i can cope with that. I seem to work alot slower than everyone else for some reason, i think this might be a confidence thing, i dont trust my own judgement! But found out the brief we were set from the day i was off ill - i need to buy the newspapers the daily mirror, the guardian and the daily mail on Monday 22nd. I then need to identify a story issue or theme that runs through all the papers. The final product is the three A3 sheets, one for each paper. I can use type or image...
I will have to get a copy of the brief..not sure if they want it to be hand rendered or what. But having my elective is well as this brief and the illustrator one! Its all pilling up! I shall have to get the illustrator brief out of the way this weekend.

I am ill..

Might as well use my sick day to do some work from home.
This is the new poster for the NHS hygiene campaign.
Using red and green, to draw on the traffic light awareness system already employed in the NHS to highlight good and bad practices, the posters for the campaign feature detailed photography of well-known hand gestures that work alongside key messages. The images are shown on black backgrounds to ensure they stand out.
‘We were asked to develop an engaging and effective campaign, which we carefully considered and thoroughly researched with the target audience,’ says managing director of 999, Aileen Geraghty. ‘We are confident the campaign will have real standout in busy hospital environments and drive people to take the necessary steps to fight infection.’

Design News!

Cigarette Packets are being redesigned...Chili Con Carne’s picture warnings will appear on all cigarette packs in the UK from October 2008, according to newly passed legislation.

Vault 49

This image by the design group Vault 49. I like the use of mixed media, the patterns on top of the photography. The patterns look like they are done on the computer but have a hand drawn style or affect to them, creating a bigger contrast to the curved edges of the woman in the photograph. The patterns are also in colour whereas the woman is in black and white, creating a big comparison between the two.

Cut & Paste

Came across this website on myspace - its useful for something.

You often see a piece of a designers work and not know what the original brief was. I like that when you look at the past events of this tournment it shows the word they were given with their final image.
One of the words was "OXYMORON"

^^ Image Above ^^

I think the idea behind this piece is clever. It is using the meaning of the word oxymoron, opposites or self-contradictory. The dove, a symbol of peace is dropping what appears to be bombs onto religious grounds.
(Hector Ortiz)

I also quite like the simplictic style of this image, if it was too busy it would be quite hard to work out what the message of the piece was. I think he chose a good idea of oxymoron to try and explain, as peace and war are complete opposites.
www.serifpublishing.com

This is a good site, that gives you links to take you to other designers work, and is updated quite often by the looks of things!

A Personal Plethora...

Have to come up with 5 categories to put designers work into..."It is paramount to the development of your work that you investigate, understand and respond to the work of existing artists, designers, typographers, illustrators, photographers, film makers, craftspeople, architects etc." - taken from our brief!

I began this by looking at various books, flicking through and coming up with one category that i would put this piece into..
These are some of the words that i came up with:
Hand Rendered
Digital
Mixed Media
Feminine
Simple
Colourful
Cartoon
Realistic
People
Complex
Advertising
Random!
Montage
Collage
Real Life

Si Scott

Just looking at Si Scotts work. What takes me by surprise is that this seems like the work of a female, its quite feminine with the delicate features and swirls of the text. Its just quite beautiful typography, very eye catching. It is become his trade mark now, all of his work contains the same kind of swirls. I am unsure of how to take his work, i dont know if that is anything more than the text just being "pretty"
He did typography for the orange advert, i think this is from where he became well known

My First Blog

First of many blogs to come i assume, so far so good. Enjoying Leeds and the course but struggling a bit with missing home!
