Visual thinking

First visual thinking lesson today, basically had to draw lines! And to think i was worried about if my drawing skills were going to be good enough for this class..but with have to do alot of drawing as support material for this module..not to sure what we need to do drawings off. Shall have to check this with Fred..if its just doodles or if it is to be of relevance to our projects.
Just been doing some work on my Racism and Steretype project tonight, its related to the newspaper brief we go over reading week. We have to do three posters relating to a message within the newspapers..and mine was to do with police having the right to stop more black teenagers in order to prevent gun and knife crime. So i broke this message down to "dont judge a book by its cover..." I have not really got very far tonight, i have ideas but i just dont know if they are going to work so end up going in circle. But my mind feels a bit boggled, so going to leave it until tomorrow now when a little more refreshed! Have the day of so have plently of time to go over some ideas and take photos if i need to.
Its also haloween tomorrow! Shall have to sory my fancy dress outfit out too. Excited! I dont think i have ever been excited about haloween, but it seems to be an exuse for a big night out agmonst students, so im not complaining. If everyone gets this excited about haloween god knows what christmas time is going to be like.

Home!

Just trying to do my Critical Studies Brief, looking at adverts and came across this one...

Its from 1990 - i like it because its eye catching. If you just glance at it you want to look at it again to understand the full meaning of it. The use of humour makes it stick in your mind which is really the whole point of advertising.

My Favourite Adverts!

Printmaking!

Last day of the elective tomorrow, have really enjoyed it. Its such a long day though and i am so tired. I ache all over from standing up all day! I am obviously not hardcore enough - so have been having little naps when ever possible. Just starting to do some work now - have to do a sketch book and write about each process and what not.
Am going home tomorrow, really looking forward to it. Mainly because im anxious as to how it we feel to be back home.

Elective

My printmaking elective starts tomorrow, it says that we need to take imagery. It can be photographic or hand drawn..so just trying to decide what to take now. It all has to be the same theme too, will have to look into my A-Level stuff..i think its times like this when having done foundation would help, just because i would have more material.

Book Binding!

Today we made a book! I didnt expect it to be such a professional looking hardback book. It was quite a tedious day though, our tutor made it look so easy but it was just so fiddly - i was not very good at it - managed to make quite a mess. The end product however is pretty good, a few glue spillages here and there, but i can cope with that. I seem to work alot slower than everyone else for some reason, i think this might be a confidence thing, i dont trust my own judgement! But found out the brief we were set from the day i was off ill - i need to buy the newspapers the daily mirror, the guardian and the daily mail on Monday 22nd. I then need to identify a story issue or theme that runs through all the papers. The final product is the three A3 sheets, one for each paper. I can use type or image...
I will have to get a copy of the brief..not sure if they want it to be hand rendered or what. But having my elective is well as this brief and the illustrator one! Its all pilling up! I shall have to get the illustrator brief out of the way this weekend.

I am ill..

Might as well use my sick day to do some work from home.
This is the new poster for the NHS hygiene campaign.
Using red and green, to draw on the traffic light awareness system already employed in the NHS to highlight good and bad practices, the posters for the campaign feature detailed photography of well-known hand gestures that work alongside key messages. The images are shown on black backgrounds to ensure they stand out.
‘We were asked to develop an engaging and effective campaign, which we carefully considered and thoroughly researched with the target audience,’ says managing director of 999, Aileen Geraghty. ‘We are confident the campaign will have real standout in busy hospital environments and drive people to take the necessary steps to fight infection.’

Design News!

Cigarette Packets are being redesigned...Chili Con Carne’s picture warnings will appear on all cigarette packs in the UK from October 2008, according to newly passed legislation.

Vault 49

This image by the design group Vault 49. I like the use of mixed media, the patterns on top of the photography. The patterns look like they are done on the computer but have a hand drawn style or affect to them, creating a bigger contrast to the curved edges of the woman in the photograph. The patterns are also in colour whereas the woman is in black and white, creating a big comparison between the two.

Cut & Paste

Came across this website on myspace - its useful for something.

You often see a piece of a designers work and not know what the original brief was. I like that when you look at the past events of this tournment it shows the word they were given with their final image.
One of the words was "OXYMORON"

^^ Image Above ^^

I think the idea behind this piece is clever. It is using the meaning of the word oxymoron, opposites or self-contradictory. The dove, a symbol of peace is dropping what appears to be bombs onto religious grounds.
(Hector Ortiz)

I also quite like the simplictic style of this image, if it was too busy it would be quite hard to work out what the message of the piece was. I think he chose a good idea of oxymoron to try and explain, as peace and war are complete opposites.
www.serifpublishing.com

This is a good site, that gives you links to take you to other designers work, and is updated quite often by the looks of things!

A Personal Plethora...

Have to come up with 5 categories to put designers work into..."It is paramount to the development of your work that you investigate, understand and respond to the work of existing artists, designers, typographers, illustrators, photographers, film makers, craftspeople, architects etc." - taken from our brief!

I began this by looking at various books, flicking through and coming up with one category that i would put this piece into..
These are some of the words that i came up with:
Hand Rendered
Digital
Mixed Media
Feminine
Simple
Colourful
Cartoon
Realistic
People
Complex
Advertising
Random!
Montage
Collage
Real Life

Si Scott

Just looking at Si Scotts work. What takes me by surprise is that this seems like the work of a female, its quite feminine with the delicate features and swirls of the text. Its just quite beautiful typography, very eye catching. It is become his trade mark now, all of his work contains the same kind of swirls. I am unsure of how to take his work, i dont know if that is anything more than the text just being "pretty"
He did typography for the orange advert, i think this is from where he became well known

My First Blog
