What is a Book?

I have already done some previous posts on this question.
But thought i would write what my first impressions of the work Book are.

A book is a group of pages bound together.
It could be Hardback or paper.
The content could be : Fictional, Stories, Personal - Dairies/Journals/Sketchbooks. Informative, Photos (Albums) , Records - e.g Doctor keeps a record of your medical History in a file.
Is a book always paper based? You could have a book on the computer, a folder of files? A database? Is there such thing as a virtual Book, does it need to have a physical feel to it?
The most well known book? I would say The Bible is possibly the only book that everyone worldwide knows, or who has at least heard of.

Keys!

Looking at different ways of presenting the keys. I thought that having an imprint would be quite suitable. As the idea of the key bieng something you impose on a lock.

Sam Winston created a sculpture out of a dictionary. Basing it on he premise - what would happen if all the words were to physically meet.

Book Idea?

I have moved away from keys a bit, more towards security.
I think i am going to do a book, that has lots of levels of security - this could be many layers, use of padlocks and boxes. So that it is an interaction for the viewer to try and gain access to the book - as this is the point of security and keys - to control access to buildings and objects.
Inside i think i will have either a really simple book, maybe even a blank book - just for impact. It is also quite ambiguous, the viewer can make up their own interpretation of what the piece is all about.
Or, inside i could have a book, make up a series of peep/key hole images, referring to the idea of invasion of Privacy.

Even more Book Art...

I quite like this, it is changing the function of book to be something more visual than writing. I assume the content of the book somehow relates to birds.. the website didn't really give much information. It just caught my eye, at it really challenges the function and definition of a book - maybe something to consider when designing my book? What do i want the book to function as.

This
is a book called, "change the world for a fiver" It is the content of this book that i really enjoy and find interesting. It contains 50 different ideas for improving the world. Some of the ideas are very simple, some more complex. Everyone can do some of them and that does make you feel good. It offers simple suggestions on things to do that can help work towards a better world to live in, from really simple objectives like refusing carrier bags to somewhat larger things such as giving blood. All its suggestions are put forward in an informative and humourous, yet very simple way. It's one of those books that leaves you feeling happy and inspired once you have finished reading it! A definate worthwhile read.

Doug Buebe

Doug Beube physically deconstructs books and sculpts them into seemingly impossible shapes. The artist's fantastical vision reshapes books into forms that mirror their implied content, evoking the playful construct of language.

Doug Beube is a mixed-media visual artist who works in collage, bookworks, installation and photography.

His work is so clever. I am obviously not going to create works of art such as his! But i thought it was interesting. It does not really function as a book though.. it is deconstructing one. Would this kind of thing really fit into the brief of creating a book?
Maybe i need to look at some more books, that think more about the content..

So, final decision - record images/ things relating to the word "DISCARDED"

Brain Storm - Unwanted Objects

-Abandoned Vehicles
-Rubbish
-Scrap Yards

Maybe Broken objects would be more interesting? Or discarded Objects in general.
I don't know if it would be a good thing that the objects all appear quite random and the only thing they have in common is that they have been discarded and are unwanted.
Here are some images from deviant art to help explain my idea...

100

New brief to collect or record anything, somehow relating it to the number 100. I think i am going to record and collect unwanted objects, abandoned things. This could be quite interesting..first things that come to mind are a scrap yard. On the train home we went past one full of cars..that were obviously out of use but to me were quite interesting. I think the idea of unwanted objects interesting because they may not have a function anymore, but it is quite interesting to think of the story behind them, why have they been abandoned. The objects that come to mind look good as an image, but are past working. This idea just generally intrigues me.

Lonely Flat.

This weekend is going be an unsociable one. No-one in this flat or next door. But i have lots of work to do anyway so i will have a chance to get on with it with no distractions..thats if i dont start to go crazy.

This is a really good typography site. It uses the personalities and shapes of animals to create a typeface most suited to them. Its just interesting to see which aspects of the animals the designer picks up on. He is very sucessful and putting across the typefaces.

Research Photos.
